OUR HISTORY
1940s - 1950s
Falmouth’s modern marine construction history is heavily influenced by Dan Clark, a major figure in local lore who, among other endeavors, built liberty ships during WWII. Post-war, he designed and built large research buoys for WHOI and MIT, in addition to building hundreds of piers locally and around New England.
1960s - 1990s
In the 1960s, Chip Shultz began working for Dan Clark. During his many years with Dan and under his tutelage, Chip learned his trade, gathering along the way the necessary licenses to operate tugboats, cranes, and even a steam crane. In the mid-1990s, Dan sold his floating gear and equipment and Chip was asked by some local institutions to help with waterfront projects. Over the next few years, using rental gear and local help, Chip laid the groundwork for the William Steele Shultz Company.
1999-2018
In 1999, the W.S. Shultz Co. was incorporated and helped immeasurably by the acquisition of a crane and the hiring of Matthew Bumpus, whose expertise as a crane operator and knowledge of Woods Hole’s waterways and environmental nuances is second to none. Matthew still acts as our foreman all these years later. The W.S. Shultz Co. spent the next 19 years under Chip, building seawalls and piers and taking on any number of engineering challenges, even at one point using the barge William S. Shultz to move a house.
2018-Present
In 2018, Chip passed the torch to Ben Karson, who grew up in Falmouth and had worked for W.S. Shultz Co. since 2008, and who handled some of their most challenging projects during his time as an employee. As the owner and president, Ben continues the long history of marine construction of the highest caliber and commands a crew dedicated to their craft, their workmanship, and the waterfront which defines their home.
